Relocate TNG from XP to virtualised Server 2008 R2 x64

Postby a.of.grant » Thu Jun 12, 2014 9:49 am

Hi,

Our TNG instance currently resides on an old XP desktop which is about to be de-commissioned (about time).

The plan is to migrate TNG to a virtualised instance of Windows 2008 R2 server. Before we get stuck in, I'd like to ask a couple of questions:
1) Does TNG have any issues running in a virtualised environment?
2) How does one migrate the data stored by the current instance of TNG?

Thanks,
Andrew Grant

  1. It will depend on your VM environment, please refer to post:
Can I install TNG with buffer on Virtual PC?

The only know issue is that Windows changed from Windows 8 and newer to have authentication for installation of drivers. You can refer to the forum link for buffer drivers and programming of buffer: TNG USB Buffer on Windows 8 and newer

  2. To move TNG, refer to forum post:
    How do I re-install/move TNG?

Hi Belinda,

Thanks for getting back to me. The new machine would be Server 2008 R2 standard running on VMware VSphere 5. The hardware used is a Bladecenter S. The TNG buffer would be plugged into the media tray (which is a DVD player and 2 USB ports) connected to the hypervisor running the TNG server.

Please let me know if the above rings any alarm bells on your end.

In the past, weused the media tray to connect USB hard drives to our file server.

To my knowledge, the only risk is that we'd lose automatic failover should the hypervisor fail as the media tray can't follow the VM to another hypervisor. As the service is non-critical, it shouldn't be an issue.

Please let me know if

On VM you can loose communication with the devices, as errors can occur on any system.

TNG has a feature where it will alert you if the buffer is not detected or if your TNG has not loaded calls for a set period. You need to have a SMTP mail server. For configuration details please see:
TNG Alarm Configuration (TNG v1.0.6.5 or newer)
