TNG Mimecast SMTP Compatibility

Postby ZanePhelan » Thu Mar 17, 2016 11:52 am

Hi Support,

I am having a problem with the new version of Mimecast in that TNG (1.1.1.12) is failing to be able to send emails via this interface (za-smtp-outbound-1.mimecast.co.za / 41.74.197.202).

When attempting to send a email via the TNG report email link, TNG gives the following error: "The email failed to send! Please contact your local support centre"

When testing via telnet I discovered that I need to authenticate the connection by base64 encoding the username and password for the sending of a email to work. The email sent successfully. (https://www.base64encode.org/)

I then tested TNG by using the same base64 encoded username and password into TNG and this still failed...

If I check TNG logs there are no errors for using the link and when using the scheduler, the logs only reports that the schedule is run, but no errors are written to the log.

Is there a way to enable verbose logging on TNG to get more info as to the fault or the issue that TNG has with the Mimecast interface?

Please advise how to resolve this issue?

Thanks

Hi Zane,
We do not have any facility to work with non standard plain text authentication.

There is not a More verbose version of the logs.

What you could do is run a wireshark capture on the PC where TNG is and only capture the port involved (usually 25) and then check what is sent and received there.

Thanks Leon, good idea. Will see what Wireshark has to tell.

Please see attached screenshot.

After initial connection to the mimecast server, mimecast responds with a request for authentication:

Response: 250-za-smtp-1.mimecast.co.za Hello [41.193.98.138 (41.193.98.138)]\r\n
Response: 250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN\r\n
Response: 250-AUTH=PLAIN LOGIN \r\n
Response: 250-STARTTLS\r\n
Response: 250 HELP\r\n

TNG responds by resetting the transaction

Command Line: RSET\r\n

TNG then proceeds without authentication. This is what is causing the emails to fail as no authentication is completing.

Please advice. I can send through the captures to you directly.

Thanks
Zane
