This program has performed an illegal operation

Postby John Richard Procter » Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:01 pm

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" or "The parameter is incorrect" or "Win32 API function failed"

The information below only applies to Windows 95, 98
and ME.

This is caused by running out of resources. Certain
applications use more resources than others, and
running too many resource-intensive applications
together will cause errors similar to the above.
Windows may also stop completely, including the movement
of the mouse cursor. Applications will generate strange
errors, not always with meaningful error messages.

Topaz 1.4.0.13 and below are more resource-intensive
than recent versions, so if you're running an older
version, try upgrading. The only other solution is
not to run the resource-intensive applications together,
perhaps closing Topaz before running another application,
or moving Topaz to a different PC.

Try the following:

  1. Resources can be monitored with the Resource
Meter program, which comes with Windows 98/ME. This will
also provide a warning when resources are low.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Performance.
Drag this to your startup to always run in the background
and use it to monitor the resources to prevent the system
    from crashing.
  2. Only run applications that you are currently working in,
close the others to free resources.
  3. Remove applications that are not needed from the Windows
Startup folder. Open them as you need to work in the
    application.
  4. Close Outlook Express or Internet Explorer when you
are not using it. Both are very resource intensive.
  5. Make sure there is always about 50 Meg free.
Constantly monitor the space available. Once you have
deleted files also clear the recycle bin.
