Amethyst Archive space allocation and management

Postby Leon van Heerden » Fri Aug 05, 2016 11:58 am

Datatex has made the Archive facility available to give an external copy of the recordings to clients to include in their backups. Amethyst does not manage this location after archiving; the client manages their backups.

The Archive process copies all the recordings and a copy of the database into the date folders. Every time the Archive runs, it will create a folder for the date the process was started on , e.g. 20160131 and copy the database into this folder. This database will then cover all data from the current date and time. Everything that you could search for on Amethyst live on that day, is then still available in that database.

Then the copy of the recordings start. The recordings are copied into the date folder of the recorded date. Since this is an incremental archive, if the process didn't run for a couple of days, when it runs, each date's recordings will be copied into the appropriate date folder. E.g. recordings of 2015-12-31 will be copied into a folder 20151231, regardless of which date the archive process is running on.

Recommended:
  • The archive location doesn't have delete rights for all users.
  • The Archive location is included in your standard backup processes.
  • Delete access is kept to a minimum
  • If you need to manage space, we recommend method 1 "Delete some of the database files"

Example structure of an Archive location:
20160525 (Wednesday) - Uses 5.1 Gig (4 Gig DB, 1.1 Gig recordings)
20160526 (Thursday) - Uses 5 Gig (4 Gig DB, 1 Gig recordings)
20160527 (Friday) - Uses 4.9 Gig (4 Gig DB, 0.9 Gig recordings)
20160528 (Saturday) - Uses 4 Gig (4 Gig DB, 0 Gig recordings)
20160529 (Sunday) - Uses 4 Gig (4 Gig DB, 0 Gig recordings)
20160530 (Monday) - Uses 5 Gig (4 Gig DB, 1 Gig recordings)
20160531 (Tuesday) - Uses 5.1 Gig (4.1 Gig DB, 1 Gig Recordings)
20160601 (Wednesday) - Uses 5 Gig (4.1 Gig DB, 0.9 Gig Recordings)
20160602 (Thurdays) - Uses 5.2 Gig (4.1 Gig DB, 1.1 Gig Recordings)

The Database will keep growing, the recordings will differ every day depending on the amount of calls.
If purging is enabled, the database will at some point when the purging takes place every day, stabilize and not grow much more.

The example above: AmtListen will list each date's database as a source to start accessing recordings. When you select a database you can search the recordings as if you are back on that date. E.g. If you select 20160531 , you will be able to search for recordings up to 2016-05-31 21:00 and before that, but you will not be able to search for 2016-06-01, since that didn't exist in the database you selected.

If you need to free space there are 2 ways that this can be managed.
1. Delete some of the database files - The recordings are still available if other databases cover the dates.
Go into the date folder and find the "amt.fdb*" files and delete them.
This method allows you to keep the recordings and use other databases to search for the calls.
Example above:
1.1 You deleted each weekday database and keep only the Sunday database (Do this on a Monday to ensure that you have a database for the week). AmtListen will only list the database 20160530. You will be able to search for all calls that were live on the Amethyst server on 2016-05-30.
1.2 You delete all the databases for the previous month and only leave the first day of the month. AmtListen will then list only 20160501, 20160601 and all the dates for the current month until you delete the database.

2. Delete entire date folders - The recordings and database is then gone.
Delete the date folders you don't need anymore.
If you have purging enabled on your Amethyst server and you delete a folder that is no longer live on your Amethyst server, the recordings will then be gone.
