Network cable plugged in, but no network card lights come on

Postby Belinda Frick » Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:23 am

On older Amethyst servers with an Intel D845GB motherboard, the
onboard 10/100Mbit network card might have a problem auto-negotiating
with certain gigabit switches.

This problem occurred with an HP managed switch.

Newer motherboards worked fine (D915 and D945 chipset).

The solution is to force the connection to 10/100MBps full-duplex
on the switch.

It's not known whether this is a problem with the network card, and
newer network cards have it fixed, or whether it's with the switch and
newer network cards have a work-around for the problem.

To narrow down the problem, you can also try a different switch or a hub.
If it works on a different switch, the problem is probably in the
auto-negotiation.

If it does not work, it is possible that the onboard network card is
faulty or blown. Contact Datatex if you cannot correct the problem.
