How to make firefox listen to recordings

Postby Belinda Frick » Wed Nov 17, 2010 8:03 am

Firefox doesn't playback wav, gsm or wax files by default, there is a
registry file you have to edit to add these entries.

You can check if your firefox supports playing these files already by going directly to step 4.

Firefox need to be closed when you do this:

Go to the following location on your C-drive;

C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Windows Login Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

Open the pluginreg.dat file and look for the [PLUGINS] header.
Find the the line with "Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library|$".
The line below this line will contain the number of plugins configured for the media player.
Add 2 to this number and update the number. [e.g. 9 will become 11]
The following 2 lines need to be added to the end of this plugin list and the plugin
numbers updated. [the 9 and 10 needs to be the next numbers in the list for your configuration]

9|audio/x-ms-wav|Media Files|gsm,*|$
10|audio/x-ms-wav|Media Files|wav,*|$

You will notice that the list starts at 0 and not at 1, please take this in account when
adding the last 2 lines.

Here is an exapmle of when the section should look like after edtting the file:

11
0|application/asx|Media Files|*|$
1|video/x-ms-asf-plugin|Media Files|*|$
....
7|video/x-ms-wmv|Media Files|wmv,*|$
8|video/x-ms-wvx|Media Files|wvx,*|$
9|audio/x-ms-wav|Media Files|gsm,*|$
10|audio/x-ms-wav|Media Files|wav,*|$

Save and close this file.

Open Firefox and type the following in the Address Bar:
about:plugins

This will display the current plugins configured, find the Windows Media Player sections and make
sure that the GSM and WAV options are now also displayed there.
