Utilities to process data in Amethyst version 1.4 onwards

Postby Belinda Frick » Tue Nov 16, 2010 11:13 am

The main focus of AMETHYST 1.4 is to simplify
the process of data growth even further.

One of the aspects that has been eliminated
in 1.4, is the need to purge data on a
regular basis. There are several benefits that
will be prominent with this transformation
e.g. enhanced search speeds.

Accompanying the 1.4 version is the readily available
AMTRSMOVE program. This "move program" will be
used with versions 1.4 onwards.

This eliminates the need for the following two
programs used thusfar:

1. AMTARCHIVE

Reason:

Since AMTRSMOVE will be used to free up disk space, the database
growth will no longer advance to the sizes dealt with currently.

2. AMTBACKUP

Reason:

From versions 1.4 onwards the only method we will support is
system level backups. Users have to use their current backup
strategies when doing AMETHYST backups.

LINUX installations:

Backup scripts with automatic execution via cron jobs will
be provided by DATATEX.

Backing up versions under 1.4:

1. Use gbak to copy amt.fdb to the backup location.
2. Copy all modified sound and screen files to the backup location.

Since version 1.4.0.2 this modification is created in
/opt/amethyst/bin/change.log of the AMTSWEEPER.

NOTE:

The content of this "change-list" will be fine-tuned
in future releases.

A new program that will be available under 1.5 is the
AMTPURGE program. This will only be used for PURGE
purposes. Thus backups prior to the purging is essential
to retain the data.
