Amethyst 1.4 archive and purge program

Postby Belinda Frick » Tue Nov 16, 2010 8:03 am

This is not applicable to Amethyst 1.5 and newer.
1.Installation
There will be a self-extracting file that will copy the program to the correct
directory.

2.Command prompt usage.
There are two choices, Archive and Purge. Archive will make a copy of the
recorded data, and remove the audio data and screenshots from the live database.
Purge removes all the data that was archived from the source database.

Archive usage:
1. Path of the database to archive to (Destination database)
2. Volume for archiving, Max length=30 char
3. A for archiving to ensure right choice
4. Path to the source database (Normally c:\Program Files\Datatex\Amethyst\AMT.gdb)
5. Date to archive (everything on and prior to this date), FORMAT: YYYY/MM/DD
e.g. "c:\Backup\AMT.gdb" "myVol" A "c:\Program Files\Datatex\Amethyst\AMT.gdb" 2002/07/01

Purge usage:
1. P for purge to ensure right choice
2. Path to the database when purging (Source database)
3. Date to purge up to, FORMAT: YYYY/MM/DD
eg. P "c:\Program Files\Datatex\Amethyst\AMT.gdb" 2002/07/01

It is easier to create a new database in the graphical interface.
If you need to do it from the commandline, the database will be created in the
destination directory, the path must exist and the name will be AMT.gdb.

3.Windows interface
All the fields are the same for the windows interface
When selecting the archive database (Destination database),
select the AMT.gdb, not the AMT1.gdb,AMT2.gdb,....
Also select the source database and enter the volume.
There is a button on the interface for you to create a new database, you will be
asked for a directory and the database will be created in this directory with
the name AMT.gdb.

4.Info
»If you are working with the windows interface all error messages will be
displayed on the screen and written to a log file, but when you are running
this program from a Dos Prompt all error messages will only be written
to the log file. The log file is located in
'C:\Program files\Datatex\Amethyst\AMTBackupLog.txt'.
»When this program starts up it will close down Amethyst Server and when it has
finished, the Amethyst Server will be started up again.
»The disk space checks are done before archiving and before the backup and restore,
by default they are switched off. If you want to enable the checks,
open the file: AMTARC.ini and set 'CheckSpace=Y'. This wil enable the checks.

5. Running this program from Windows scheduler
Click on the START button in the bottom left hand corner. Go to SETTINGS and the
CONTROL PANEL. In SCHEDULE TASKS there will be a option - ADD SCHEDULED TASK.
Select the AMTBackup program
Select the repeating period (eg.Monthly)
Select the time and complete the other options.
Enter the password to the user that will be logged-in at that time
Just click finnish to complete the setup

6. Error messages
4 is an invalid number of parameters.
You have not passed the correct number of parameters. There must be 5 parameters
when archiving, and 3 parameters when doing a purge.

Source database did not open or wasn't found.
The path to your source database was incorrect or another program is connected
to the database and it can't open.

Please update database to at least version 1.1.
The database has not been updated to version 1.1, where screen shots were added.
The update program is called 'AMTUPGRD.EXE', which can be downloaded from our
web site at http://www.datatex.co.za, under downloads.
Run this program on the source database and this problem will be corrected.

Database does not exist, create new database with name AMT.gdb?
The destination database has not been created and the program wants to know if
it should create this database.

There were no records selected, check the date to archive/Purge up to.
Make sure that the date to archive/purge up to is correct. Records can't be
processed twice.

There was not enough space on your harddrive, backup and restore was
not done.
When files are archived, the live database is backed up and restored to free up
disk space (archiving doesn't change the amount of free space). Doing a backup
requires at least as much space as the existing live database uses, and there
was not enough free space.
