TNG: sending report via e-mail.Can't connect to mailserver

  • TNG require a SMTP mail server.

  • Confirm the mailserver configuration in TNG - see forum post:
How do I e-mail reports from TNG?

  • Please check in the TNG log for more detailed error entry.

If TNG sent the report the mailserver and it returned an error, it will be logged in TNG. If TNG sent the mail and no error message, then you need to let the IT support check in the mailserver logs why the e-mail did not reach the destination. It could be that the TNG e-mail address is not allowed to send, etc.

  • You can also use a Windows command prompt on the TNG server:
    Code: Select all
    telnet 127.0.0.1 25

(where 127.0.0.1 is the mailserver IP and 25 is the mailserver port number).

You will get an error message explaining why it does not connect.

If the telnet session does not connect, it proves that it is not a TNG problem. Either the settings is incorrect (IP or port) or the IP/port is being blocked on the network, etc.

Note: TNG for Asterisk runs on Linux. You use the same command in Linux. Your Linux install might not have telnet installed by default. Please ask you Asterisk/Linux support to install it.

  • If telnet does not connect, you can also try to:
    • ping the mailserver from the PC TNG is installed on
    • do a tracert to the mailserver from the PC TNG is installed on
If it cannot find the mail server it will have a result like:
      Windows-tracert.PNG
  • If Outlook is working from the TNG PC and you use the same settings in TNG, it could be that they use imap and not exchange server.

    NOTE:
    1. imap will not work.
    2. If they use exchange server, it must be configured for SMTP mail.

  • If you cannot use telnet to simulate the TNG connection to the mailserver, try putty.

    Where can I find Putty?

Use SSH and enter the mailserver IP or host name
By default the port is set to 23, change to 25 (or what your mailserver port is).
Set putty option to 'Never Close' window. It will then show if there are any error messages in stead of just closing the Putty Windows. Right-click on title bar to see messages.

To test sending an e-mail manually from the TNG PC,
try the following:
